Itinerary
Follow every stage of your journey, from your arrival in Rwanda to unforgettable wildlife encounters, mountain experiences and authentic cultural moments.
Your private guide meets you at your hotel in Kigali for an early departure toward Akagera National Park. The journey takes you through Rwanda's countryside as the landscape changes from the city to the rolling hills and agricultural communities of the Eastern Province.
Begin your first game drive through the southern plains of Akagera, where the cooler morning hours provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.
Keep watch for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippos and numerous bird species. With patience and good timing, you may also encounter some of the park's predators, including lions.
Akagera's wildlife recovery has been supported by major conservation efforts, including the reintroduction of lions and rhinoceros.
Continue deeper into the park, following the tracks through savannah and woodland habitats.
Your guide will help identify animals, birds and other signs of wildlife while sharing stories about Akagera's ecosystems and conservation history.
There will be opportunities to stop at scenic viewpoints for photographs and to appreciate the park's distinctive landscape of grasslands, lakes and distant hills.
Enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch at a designated location while taking in the surrounding scenery.
After lunch, continue toward the Lake Ihema area for the second major experience of the day.
Board a boat on Lake Ihema, one of Akagera's most rewarding wildlife experiences.
Cruise along the lake looking for hippos, crocodiles, water birds and other wildlife along the shoreline. The boat provides a different perspective of Akagera and is particularly enjoyable for photographers and birdwatchers. Scheduled boat excursions are currently offered at several times during the day, including afternoon departures.
Return to the safari vehicle for a final wildlife drive through the southern sector.
Use the final hours of daylight to look for wildlife that may become more active as temperatures begin to fall. Your guide will select the best available route according to wildlife sightings and road conditions.
Conclude your safari and leave the park through the southern entrance.
Begin the journey back to Kigali, enjoying the changing landscapes of eastern Rwanda along the way.
Arrive back in Kigali and conclude your 1 Day Akagera National Park Adventure with Rock Journeys.
